There are many classes of drugs that can be used for treating the symptoms of gout however, very few gout remedies that actually treat the uric acid concentration in the blood are available in the market. Many of the ones that work superb are still not approved and are under testing in FDA laboratories. Therefore, until these drugs come into circulation, the method of treating gout shall remain to address the pain symptoms associated with the joints.
The use of NSAIDs, steroids and Colchicine are most widely practiced and are often the first line of defense with respect to gout. The former is the largest prescribed drug and in some 3% of the population who remain unresponsive to NSAIDs, colchicines and steroids are advised. The side effects of all these drugs are similar and can sometimes be too much to bear. That is why they are to be taken for a period of no more than one week to two weeks at most.
